Liposuction is a surgical technique that improves the body's
contour by removing excess fat from fatty tissue deposits located under
the skin and muscle.
Body sculpture by liposuction is literally a dream come true. Localized
accumulations of fat, which are often inherited and frequently impossible to
eliminate by exercise or dieting, can now be removed permanently by
liposuction surgery, never to plague you again in that area.
Liposuction involves the use of a small stainless steel tube called
a cannula. The cannula is connected to a specialized suction pump and
inserted through tiny skin incisions. The removal of fat is accomplished
as the suction cannula creates tiny tunnels through the fatty layers.
After surgery, these tunnels collapse resulting in an improved body
contour.
Are the results of liposuction permanent?
Fat cells that are removed by liposuction do not grow back. As long as the patient does
not gain excessive amounts of weight, the new, more pleasing silhouette is permanent.
A women tends to put weight on her thighs and knees, but will find that after liposuction,
these areas are less likely than other areas to accumulate fat when she gains weight. In fact
people who do not watch their diet and do NOT exercise can gain weight after liposuction in the
sites not treated. However, their liposuction treated areas will continue to maintain the slimmer contour!
Do we always make fat in the same place?
Body fat in an adult tends to increase gradually over the
years. After age 30, an individual tends to add fat according to a
genetically predetermined pattern. This fat
distribution is often resistant to exercising and dieting, such as on
the abdomens and hips of women after pregnancy.
For many people who have inherited excessive accumulations of fat, liposuction is the only
realistic means of significantly changing the body's silhouette. In effect liposuction is
equivalent to being able to "spot diet".
Tumescent Local Anesthesia
The Tumescent anesthesia technique was developed in 1985.
This method uses large volumes of a dilute solution of lidocaine, a
local numbing medicine, in combination with epinephrine, a medication
which shrinks
capillaries. The volume is calculated based on your height and weight.
The combination of these principal drugs create a very efficient anesthesia that avoids serious bleeding
and provides for a safe surgery.
In fact this method is so effective that patients no longer need intravenous
sedatives, narcotics or general anesthesia. This technique is now considered
the safest form of liposuction for removing large
amounts of fat because there is virtually no blood loss and has a reduced
post operative recovery time with optimal cosmetic results and a 12 hour
numbing effect.
Once the area has become completely numb, the surgery is essentially
painless. In addition, you will amazingly be able to stand up during
breaks in the surgery, eat and go to the bathroom. This makes it possible
to view
ongoing results. You thereby optimize satisfaction in creating your own
contour.
Surgical Risks
As with any surgical procedure, liposuction is associated
with certain common side effects which may include: bruising, swelling
and temporary numbness. Although irregularities
of the skin is possible following liposuction, the side effect is minimized
by being awake during Tumescent Technique.
The slow resolution of post surgical swelling will delay the ultimate results for 12 to 16 weeks,
however patients will immediately see some dramatic results.
Although the results of liposuction are often quite spectacular, it is
not realistic to expect perfection. Liposuction of the thighs, while
improving the silhouette, does not necessarily eliminate
the subtle "dimpling" of the skin that is referred to as " cellulite". Liposuction,
with the Tumescent Technique, does reduce the degree of cellulite, but
it is unlikely to eliminate it.
Rare problems that can potentially occur with any surgical procedure
include: infection, bleeding and nerve injury. The Tumescent Technique
minimizes these risks because the lidocaine solution kills
bacteria and reduces bleeding.
Return to normal activities
The reduced swelling, inflammation and pain after the Tumescent
Technique enables an accelerated return to normal physical activities
after the surgery. Some patients do find the
soreness after the surgery more bothersome than others. The majority
of patients are surprised at how quickly they can resume normal activities,
including exercise.
Results
The Tumescent Technique uses very small, micro-cannulas permitting
a more delicate and gentle type of liposuction. This allows more control
during the surgery. This will reduce the risk of
inadvertently approaching too close to the under surface of the skin and
unintentionally causing irregularities.
The very tiny openings used reduce the chance of scarring, enabling the
wounds to heal by themselves, without requiring stitches. They virtually
disappear with time. The healing rate is accelerated because no stitches
are used. This permits drainage of the slightly blood tinged anesthesia
solution. This dramatically reduces bruising.
